Dead trees in Yellowstone National Park’s hydrothermal areas appear to be wearing bobby socks. This phenomenon is the result of the trees having soaked up the mineral-laden water. After the trees die and the water in their trunks evaporates, silica leaves a white crust on the bottom of the trunks.
