In medieval Christian theology, the Virgin Mary was seen as the new Eve. Both were botanically symbolized in medieval art: Eve by the apple, Mary by the strawberry. Out of the Valley portrays the triumph of redemption and assumption into paradise, as doors to the first paradise--Eden--slam shut.
