Norman Silva’s mixed-media sculptures Transcending Maya (2023), Metztli’s Ascension (2024), and Dove in Buluc Chabtan’s Garden (2025) examine transformation through material contrast, symbolic structure, and spatial balance.

Norman Silva is a sculptor working in mixed media, combining organic and industrial materials to explore mythology, perception, and spiritual transformation through form.

Drawing from philosophical and mythological frameworks, Silva uses industrial and organic materials to explore perception, autonomy, and spiritual clarity. These works are not illustrative narratives but constructed meditations, where form and material operate as metaphors for inner movement and awareness.

Transcending Maya centers on the philosophical concept of illusion, the idea that material reality obscures deeper truth. A vertical, weathered core is encased within a rigid golden framework, rising from a base of living grass. The contrast between organic growth and metallic containment establishes tension between nature and structure, freedom and constraint. The cage-like form suggests imposed limitation, while the central element implies resilience and continuity. By grounding the sculpture in grass, Silva reinforces the notion that transcendence does not reject the material world but emerges through conscious engagement with it.

In Metztli’s Ascension, Silva explores cycles of release and self-realization through a vertically oriented composition referencing lunar symbolism. Soft, padded forms in pale blue are suspended within a skeletal steel framework, counterbalanced by weighted elements below. The materials suggest both protection and burden, echoing the process of shedding past identities. The upward motion implied by the structure reflects ascension not as escape, but as recalibration, an alignment between autonomy and purpose. The sculpture’s open framework allows space to function as an active component, reinforcing the theme of transition.

Dove in Buluc Chabtan’s Garden presents a quieter, more contemplative exploration of balance and coexistence. A biomorphic wooden form, visibly marked by growth rings, is pierced and stabilized by a steel rod, while a smooth plaster element rests gently above. The materials remain distinct yet interdependent, suggesting harmony rather than dominance. The reference to Buluc Chabtan, a Mayan deity associated with death and renewal, positions the work within a cyclical worldview, where destruction and regeneration coexist. The sculpture emphasizes stillness, restraint, and equilibrium.

These sculptures articulate a cohesive inquiry into transcendence as a lived, material process. Silva’s work consistently navigates the boundary between structure and freedom, weight and lift, illusion and clarity. By combining organic substances with industrial frameworks, he constructs visual metaphors for inner transformation grounded in physical reality. The unifying theme across the works is conscious ascent: not an abandonment of the world, but a refined awareness shaped through balance, resistance, and release.
