Exploring Endurance and Myth in Athina Skevi’s Works

Athina Skevi’s work merges myth, body, and raw emotion into hauntingly beautiful imagery.

Athina Skevi blends myth, body, and emotion through textured, symbolic works exploring endurance, fate, and resilience.

Using acrylics, gouache, and liquid graphite, she transforms pain, resilience, and mythology into visual narratives. Her 2024 series, Endure, Clotho, and Peitho, engages themes of survival, creation, and persuasion, blurring the lines between ancient myth and lived experience.

In Endure, Skevi pays tribute to the relentless challenge of living with chronic pain. The close-up of a veiled face, marked by red undertones and textures that evoke both fragility and strength, becomes a quiet yet powerful portrait of persistence. The interplay of shadow and scarlet hues highlights both suffering and resilience, transforming personal struggle into universal endurance.

Referencing one of the three Fates of Greek mythology, Clotho depicts the artist’s own hands weaving the threads of life. The organic, almost otherworldly textures suggest both the delicacy and inevitability of existence. The tactile details, fibers, knots, and veins, reinforce the connection between creation and mortality, grounding mythology in the physicality of the human body.

Peitho, Athina Skevi, 2024, acrylic ink, gouache, liquid graphite, 12 x 12 in. / 30.48 x 30.48 cm.

In Peitho, Skevi reimagines the goddess of persuasion as an intimate, psychological force. The piercing green eye, surrounded by scale-like textures, embodies an inner dialogue urging resilience. Both confrontational and empathetic, the piece persuades the viewer,  and perhaps the artist herself, to keep moving forward despite hardship.

Taken together, these three works weave a mythic tapestry of pain, power, and perseverance. Skevi translates ancient archetypes into deeply personal meditations on endurance and willpower. Her art suggests that even in struggle, there is a narrative thread, one spun, twisted, and reinforced by the human spirit.
