Conservation, preservation, and restoration
The International Council of Museums' conservation committee defines conservation as the measures and actions used to safeguard tangible cultural heritage while maintaining access for present and future generations. Within that broad field, it distinguishes three kinds of activity: preventive conservation, remedial conservation, and restoration. Preventive work seeks to avoid or minimize deterioration without interfering with an object's materials or appearance. Remedial conservation acts directly to arrest damage or stabilize a fragile object. Restoration acts directly on a stable object to make its meaning or function more legible, often changing its appearance in the process. From rules to risk management
Preventive conservation is strongest when it asks: What can happen? How likely is it? How much value or information could be lost? What control is feasible? A universal rule can obscure those questions. The same relative humidity is not equally suitable for metal, paper, wood, salt-contaminated ceramics, plastics, and a mixed-media installation. The same light exposure is not equally consequential for stone and a watercolor containing fugitive colorants.
Risk also depends on duration and repetition. Why documentation is conservation
Dissociation may be less visible than a tear, but it can be equally destructive to an artwork's continuity. Contemporary art and material uncertainty
Contemporary art complicates simple care formulas. Artists may use house paint, food, industrial plastics, software, found objects, biological material, replacement components, or equipment that becomes obsolete. Meaning may depend on change, participation, decay, a specific installation, or a recurring performance. Preserving every original component indefinitely may be impossible or contrary to the work's logic.
Material identification still matters. Common misunderstandings
Conservation does not make an artwork “like new.” Age, use, alteration, and repair can be part of an object's history. The aim and acceptable degree of change depend on significance and condition.
Reversibility is not an absolute guarantee. Some treatments cannot be fully reversed, and removing a material can itself affect original surfaces. Conservators instead weigh compatibility, retreatability, detectability, documentation, and long-term risk.
Museum conditions are not one fixed number. Climate and light decisions depend on materials, condition, local history, building capability, use, and the costs and risks created by tighter control.
Storage is not benign by default. Darkness reduces light exposure, but poor enclosures, floor-level storage, crowding, pests, leaks, lost labels, and inaccessible inspection routes can create other risks.
Aesthetic improvement is not automatically preservation. Brightening a surface, removing a coating, repainting a loss, or replacing a component changes how the work is read. Such decisions require evidence and a stated purpose.
